Loyalists, Navigators, and Marines: McMullen 2023
I handled the navigators, M.F. Maury and the “Fair Route to Rio.” Jessica Sheets, who was sitting next to me, went into her research on the Maryland Tilghman family divide by the American Revolution. Sitting beside Jessica was Paul Westermeyer. He detailed the varied life and up-and-down career of Daniel Carnick, the Marine Corps commandant who might have been. A special thanks to Henry Himes, who moderated the panel with skill not only for time but also to pose penetrating questions. Jessica, Paul, and Henry are all from the Marine Corps University. It was my pleasure to be with them bright and early Friday Sept. 22 at this year’s naval history symposium.
