A Daily Illini Reunion

great lives

I was delighted to be invited to speak on Matthew Fontaine Maury at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg as part of its Great Lives lecture series next year. Maury’s ties to the city and Spotsylvania County were wide and deep. A fellow biographer and friend Heath Lee spoke in the series the year before and told me what a wonderful experience she had had, so I already was looking forward to the Feb. 11 appearance. This year, Charlotte Gray, Winston Groom, Douglas Brinkley, Evan Thomas, Jeremy Schapp, James McPherson, et al., will be speaking. But the name that really caught my eye on the schedule was William Nack. Bill was the editor of the Daily Illini when I was a staff writer there. Of course, he will be speaking on Secretariat. A DI reunion of sorts, almost fifty years later.
